Eureka! NETDIAL + EPPPDD did the trick for the Compaq 590.
I had tried Michael's (thank you) setup with NETDIAL + EPPPD
before (slightly altered to remove some of the underbrush) which worked
ok on the other computer but not on the COMPAQ 590.
The basic difference this time is EPPPDD. I did not load anything high
(not even a rather memory-fat mouse driver) so the memory available to
ARACHNE 1.60b1 is a bit skimpy, but the major point is it works. I can
fiddle with the details later.
For your info, if you're curious, I can send a zip file with the
files I used for PPP dialup. They are essentially parts of
Michael's (and BOBCAT's) dialup files split into pieces.
If you're interested, I can give you more details.
