;-) The late Frank Costin, having made his name as aerodynamicist
for Jaguar cars, went on to design the plywood-chassis Marcos
in the early 1960s. Part of the design rationale was to have a car
light enough to return a good performance with a "bog standard"
      easily maintained engine.

He also designed a single seat shopping vehicle for "housewives"
to buy on hire-purchase. The "Sparrow" single seat electric vehicle
has just reached these shores from the States, but isn't so affordable.

Subject: A new option, maybe??

I got an error message today that I'd never gotten before: DISK FULL!

I started hunting for stuff that maybe needed clearing of the HDD. I
hunted here and there, cleaned caches [have 5 caches in 2 different
installations of Arachne], and still only had 1Mb free when I was
finally able to access Arachne.

Sent a mail from low-use profile, and realized only then that I couldn't
remember emptying the trash can. Emptied that trash can. Changed
profiles and emptied trash can for this profile. Suddenly disk space
available jumped from 1Mb to 10Mb ...!!

So, possible new option for consideration:
     If trashcan >XMb, empty trash

I could possibly set that up in a batch file with a bit of work; I could
certainly set my batch file to empty ALL the trash cans when I exit
Arachne, like I clear environment now with the s.r.c. installation.

But when I'm in the middle of testing this new version, I'm using a
bare bones batch file to start with so I can keep track of everything.

Just a thought for the future. A refinement might be an additional
message, bell & whistle, on the "Disk Full!" module; have Arachne check
to see how much space is being taken up by trash can, display trash can
usage, and give option to empty trash can -- then check to see if it can
then run with the new disk space available.

Creative has 2 versions of Play.exe on that original website. The
DOS/win3.1 package has play.exe v1.01 ... There is, however another
file for Win95 supposedly but which says it's for DOS boot only ... and
that has version 1.03 of play.exe.

I downloaded the file with the newer version of play. Anyone want's it

Not when the SB16 was a donation to an impoverished musician. :)
Before that, I had only an AdLib clone that did not function at all for
me in DOS. When you got nothing, you make do. I started writing MIDI in
Windows 3.1. :(

Michael,
When you try this PLAYMIDI.EXE, if it works on SB16, and if it
is any improvement on PLAY.EXE, would you let us all know.
My own impression is that it is really just the SBPro version of SB16's
PLAY.EXE. :(

The APM for MIDIs in Arachne was on the APM Download page of Arachne
Website the last time I looked.

FWIW: I have tried all the DOS MIDI "players" that I have come across in
about 2 years of searching the internet. Most require a MIDI board or
external device, and will only give you silence through an ordinary sound
card. :(
Those that do use the SB16 card are those, mostly from Creative, that use
the on-board synthesizer chip, and they make perfectly good MIDIs sound, as
Sergie says, awful. :(

This is probably the only reason that I keep a tamed, tuned, and dedicated
captive version of Win 3.1 on my machine.

Steve, are you sure you have the correct DNS (Dynamic Name Server)
addresses for each ISP you are accessing are entered correctly? My
first efforts with Arachne were unsuccessful because I did not know
what these numbers were and I did not enter any. I was able to
connect, but after that nothing happened. If you have these
addresses entered make sure that you enter the correct numbers for
each service and then save each one as a different Arachne profile
(.acf) file. I first connected Arachne successfully with Compuserve,
but I left them about a year ago for a local ISP. Have you visited
the Internet Resources Forum on CIS? You might want to visit there if
you have not as there are some knowledgeable folks there about
Arachne. I hope this helps and please keep trying as Arachne is
definitely worth the effort.

proprietary thing, just like Yahoo Instant Messenger....IMO they are
junk designed to straitjacket people into their respective

Gentlemen:

For those of you who are not yet believers, I submit proof that Arachne
does support IMAP. The message appended below was retrieved by my
Arachne from "pop.telebot.net", an IMAP server. Moments before, I had
used the Barebones DOS email system to send the message to myself at
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]". I retrieved the message with my Arachne.
The message is shown, headers and all, but with headers remarked out by
myself.

I'll hav eto learn about FTP.EXE. I don't yet know anything about it
except using ftp:// instead of http:// for transfering files instead of
downloading pages.

- -Probably you'll have to open anather server (like "open ftp.xs4all.nl"
- -instead of "xs4.xs4all.nl") if you use it manually).

What's xs4.xs4all.nl?
I started TELNET by pressing the [T] key.
My server is pop.hotpop.com. When I used TELNET I logged in with the
command:

telnet> pop.hotpop.com 110
telnet> user myusername
telnet> pass mypassword
Then I entered the delete comands for the messages starting with:
telnet> dele 26
telnet> dele 25
And so on until I did all of the first 26 messages
Then I tried to use a command trhat I wasn't sure would work, and it didn't.
telnet> update
telnet> -err
Then I tried a command that really should have worked but it didn't either.
telnet> quit
telnet> -err

Then it returned me to Arachne

- -Yet if you use telnet on a unix shell account, try "mc" for a change.

What do you mean? is there a "mc" command for TELNET or FTP and what does
it do?

 Sam,

Does the line in your arachne.cfg (the one you used to do IMAP),
say something like "pop.telebot.net" ???

If so.... you didn't access the telebot IMAP server.
You accessed thier POP3 server.

This a screen capture of Telneting to pop.telebot.net 110
(arachne can only use port number 110)

Hi Gregy,

Thanks, but no thanks. If it won't work with DOS, then I'm not interested.
Neither do I want to be bothered with anything that requires one of the
big browsers. ICQ is supposedly a proprietary thing also; however, someone
did write a DOS version named MICQ, and it works just swell for
communicating with the Windozers!

The FIRST thing to do when you enter the CMOS Setup Program is to do a <Print
Screen> on each and every page in the Setup Program. The LAST thing to do
BEFORE you leave the Setup Program after you have made changes is to do a
<Print Screen> on each and every page in the Setup Program. The NEXT thing
to do is to put these printouts in a safe spot where you can get your hands
