Bob,
You can get to the Internet *thru* Compuserve, but not via Compuserve. Your
line,
>>Response4 \u/noint/go:pppconnect<<
is the key! I remember some time ago someone else was trying to get on the
Internet with Arachne thru Compuserve, but did not use "/noint/go:pppconnect"
and was logging onto Compuserve. Once you are logged onto Compuserve
(without their proprietary software) you are at a dead end. IIRC, I referred
them to Compuserve's "Internet 101" lessons for instructions on how to get to
the Internet.
If you log onto to Compuserve, get the Compuserve prompt (!), then try to get
on the internet by typing, "go:pppconnect" or "go pppconnect" you can't get
get on the internet. You have to whiz right by Compuserve in order to use
the Internet thru Compuserve. I, too, access the Internet thru Compuserve
with Arachne and NetTamer.
Now, let's see if Steve Evans will post his ARACHNE.CFG so we can see what he
is trying to do.

Ummm, huh? If you have CompuServe "Classic" account (i.e. you have
a numeric ID) then you can certainly use BobCat, NetTamer,
Arachne etc with a CompuServe dial up. If you have a
CompuServe 2000 account (i.e. AOL screen names) then no, you
can't because you're using AOL's front end and it doesn't provide
a PPP connection.
I rarely use the Arachne dialer to do this. It's usually okay
if you don't need have your modem called by an 'address'.
I thought Steve said he was able to use CompuServe with Arachne,
but not with his FreeWeb account?
One thing he mentioned was the use of smtp.compuserve.com as
the outgoing mail server when not using CompuServe. In the past
you could do that, but it's now a closed relay and it won't
accept mail for sending that doesn't originate from a dialup
on a CompuServe account.
The basic setup for Arachne on Compuserve is to proceed as
normal with the setup (getting the modem to work is often
the hardest part <g>).
In Arachne.cfg the entries for CompuServe, if you're going
to use the Arachne MiniTerm.exe dialer, that you can edit
in are relatively minor, listed here by section of Arachne.cfg
Items not listed can be what setup is successful in creating:
Be sure you're in the Arachne directory when logging in.

Subject: New to Arachne, and have questions
Hi;
I'm new to Arachne, having moved from Netscape under Win31 to Arachne
using DOS 6.22. The version of Arachne I am using is 1.60.
When I am connected to the Internet, I can view the messages in my
Mail Folders, look at the files on my hard drive, etc. with no problems.
When I am not connected to the Internet, I cannot view the messages in
my Mail Folders, nor can I look at the files on my hard drive, etc.
For example, I'm not connected to the Internet. I click on Mail
Folders. The URL displays file://readmail.dgi. I am presented with the
message "Arachne Load Error". This is from
c:\arachne\system\gui\err_load.ah.
Why am I able to access everything when connected to the Internet, but
am unable to access everything when I'm not connected to the Internet?

I hope you took the Windoze bashing remarks in the spirit of good
natured ribbing in which I am sure they were offered.
Congratulations on restoring a castoff computer to working service.
I went dumpster diving behind the local computer shop today on the
way home from work. In amongst the coffee grounds and sandwich
wrappers was what appears to be a perfectly fine 486DX40 with 2 VLB
slots. Even has 256k cache! I will have to pop some 30 pin simms in
it and see if my find works. Hope to see you around here more often.

I am assuming you have a separate .acf profile for each ISP, and I
would make sure I had the correct DNS addresses in each one (as well
as all other pertinent stuff for each). I used Arachne with
Compuserve here in the US with no problems, though I never converted
my mail box to the POP3 server (I did not want to loose the ability
to access my email with DOSCIM). Since you are in the UK (is that
right?) a proxy server might be a possibility, though the best I can
offer you on that is a dumb look, no charge. Dittos for Freewwweb.
Once you get Arachne working with Freewwweb, might I recommend
installing and using Pegasus Mail for DOS as an adjunct to Arachne.
It is a full featured text mode email client that when configured
properly is completely compatible with Arachne. I use it for almost
all of my email and Arachne for pop/smtp transport, as well as for
web surfing, of course. Definitely a great combination. Get Arachne
running first and then we can get you set up with Pegasus. HTH.

Hi Joe;
Your post seems to indicate you are a sophisticated first time user with
probably more than Windows experience.
My first suggestion would be to locate MIME.cfg and, using a text editor,
insert a semicolon in front of lines 88 and 89 - which you will see both
contain the string "insert your mail floppy in drive A:".
This is only one possible explanation for your inability to read mail offline
and does not explain not being able to surf your drives - the two may be
related so the above fix, while necessary, may not be enough.
The only other thing I can think of right now is to make sure you have
defined a "TEMP" directory in your autoexec.bat and make sure it exists.
While you are at it, go to line 145 (file/dosshell.dgi) and remove the 2 "\"
in the string e$\\system....

Hi Clarence;
Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions, but alas, this did
not solve the problem.
I then thought of something, which I tried, and low and behold, I can
now surf my local hard drive, including my EMail, when I'm offline.
The problem appears to be 4DOS. I use 4DOS.COM, version 6.02, instead
of COMMAND.COM.
The solution was to start COMMAND.COM, and then ARACHNE.BAT.
However, if 4DOS.COM is the problem, then why can I surf locally when
connected to the Internet, but not when I'm disconnected from the
Internet? That is, I can use 4DOS.COM, connect to the Internet, and surf
locally with no problems.
In order to surf locally, when disconnected from the Internet, I have
to exit ARACHNE, type COMMAND.COM, and restart ARACHNE.
While this is a work-around, I'd like to know why this is happening.
Any insights?

Brian,
I think that most (if not all), of us here apologize most humbly if we
have offended you in any way.
We seem to have stepped on your toes with our "windows user" jokes.
Please believe me when I say that we were only jokeing-around.
After-all, many of the members of this list run multiple OSs.
I have 4 on this machine.
OpenDos v7.01 is the main OS. But, I also have PTS-Dos 2000, Open Linux
and ..... yes, you guessed it, a Win95 partition.

Hi Folks -
I just downloaded the DOS version, installed it, and even got it working!
You need to get the file PCP_WAT.ZIP. There is another DOS version named
PCP_PCT.ZIP. I could not get the latter to work.
PCP_WAT.ZIP works with EPPPD and the packet driver NetDial by Marc S. Ressl
Thanks guys, for all the cool info on IMAP.

Maybe, but just to test wether it's memory or connection trouble: try
telnet.exe. In fact it should work when you enter miniterm, epppd and
telnet from the dos prompt without redirecting the output to ppp.log, since
telnet automatically starts sending bootp's (arachne.bat would then act as
if offline, but core.exe -r should connect if bootp is activated in
arachne.cfg).
Do you use different modems on both systems?

Sure :))
PCP_PCT is for PC_TCP ... this is a PROPRIETARY TCP/IP Stack, which you
need in order to be able to run the program. (it's cashware :)
The Wattcp version needs a packetdriver interface. (epppd, packetdriver for
any networkcard, or any other packetdriver like ISDN, SLIP .....)

This might be part of the problem.
Shouldn't that be 7E1 ?

I couldn't find that # in my search of CS dial-up #s.
Have you tried any of these instead?
(only 1 # shows for CS Clasic)

Arachne can _properly_ use the CS DNS.
I've been browsing for the last 45 min using the above DNS settings
instead of the Cisnet.com DNS
(204.179.144.2 and 204.179.144.150)
I'll now try the freewwweb DNS
- ----
No problem with the freewwweb DNS either. (30 min, about 100 URLs)
