Hello Clarence, All:

The PS/1 with 1.50b2 on it, that "lost the race" was originally
a 25 Mhz 486, and an Evergreen Upgrade was installed, hence the
"586". I also had 32 mb of 30-pin ram installed.
The Tandy 4850 EP with the 486DX2-50 with 1.60b1, 8MB ram, somehow
was able to go from HOME to Desktop much faster, and I couldn't
help but notice. Thought something was wrong with the PS/1.
Perhaps the motherboard bus speeds are not equal, and this
can be important.
This really wasn't a fair race, as the machines were not
equal. I had the feeling that I ought to move the Evergreen
and 32 MB ram over to the Tandy, for those items would be better
utilized on the Tandy motherboard. To really complicate matters,
I installed an Aptiva HDD in the PS/1, which should have been
a little faster than the one in the Tandy.
My offhand conclusion was to just install Arachne 1.60b1 in the
PS/1, and then I wouldn't be waiting around while the Desktop
filled out in 1.50. Could be that the way 1.60b1 draws the
screens puts it ahead in that kind of race.
Really, my post was intended to show that 1.60b1 (perhaps)
can make a "slower" computer keep up with or outrun one that
has, in this case, a lot of $ thrown at it to beef it up.
(I've since learned not to do that<g>)
I've really taken to the PS/1, since I obtained it for $5.00,
and from time to time, it's the favorite in the room.
I was taken aback when the Tandy showed it up<g>.

One question. Is it possible to install 1.50 in the place
of 1.60? (same directory, c:\arachne) Personally I am happy
with 1.60, but I have lost 800x600 on two machines going from
1.50 to 1.60 due to differences in the graphics setup between
what 1.50 allowed, and what comes with 1.60b1. Both have Tseng
ET 4000 video, I believe, and had 800x600 with 1.50, but only
640x480 in 1.60.
