Subject: MS-Word to text conversion?
Many people persist in sending me MS-Word files as attachments
to their emails.
Is there a easy to use DOS utility that could convert these
damn files to text so that I could just read them without having to
pester and educate the senders?
Much of the world just assumes now that MS-Word is "standard"
practice. Lots of people that correspond with me are clueless
about the Microsoft deviation from standard email.

Known bug: If anyone is using this option it will not work (I fixed it -
and got the file size down quite much (20-30K) - and then accidently
removed the wrong directory, so I'm back to scratch).
;Replace image/jpeg config like with this to save disk space:
;image/jpeg JPG>GIF|$edjpeg.exe $1 $2
For now you can add "-gif" after djpeg.exe to get it to work.
Also it does require some sort of DPMI manager (probably cwsdpmi) - but
that's already in the main Arachne directory anyway.

Ok, Bernie, and any else interested,
I've tried DJPEG32 with 1.6b1 and here are my comments:
Don't bother to try it with Arachne 1,50b2 unless you happen to have a
DPMI service provider in your path - it won't work.
CWSDPMI.exe is included in the 1.6b1 distribution package to fatten it up
a bit, I guess, because Arachne 1.6b1 seems to work without it.
Maybe someone can tell me what it is there for.
The tests: (On my 33Mhz '486 - 640x480x16shades)
Setup: Arachne 1.50b2 Arachne 1.6b1/DJPEG16 Arachne 1.6b1/DJPEG32
Load and
Display JPG
11,322 7 5
33,235 15 14.5 9
185,935 26 24.6 13.5
When one removes the approx 3.5 sec it takes Arachne to paint the screen,
these convert to:
Load JPG
11,322 3.5 1.5
33,235 11.0 5.5
185,935 21.1 10.0
Which can be seen to be almost exactly twice as fast.
But, I think it would be more useful to reduce that 3.5 second paint job.
Since the above improvement won't work at all on a '286 - which NEEDS it
more !
Thanks, Bernie. Now how do we get enough information about Arachne to be
able to write some video drivers in ASM ?

I haven't downloaded any of the others yet - net connections are slow

(NOTE: I did download the full GUS patches, ALL 8 x 1 MEGS OF THEM, some

I won't do that again in a hurry ! ) :(

I can state this directly (after reading through the docs for DJGPP):
Do NOT, I repeat do NOT, use the DPMI server from DR-DOS 7.0x! For best
performence use CWSDPMI.EXE.
>CWSDPMI.exe is included in the 1.6b1 distribution package to fatten it up

It's for viewing PNG files.
image/png PNG>BMP|$ecwsdpmi.exe\n$epng2bmp.exe -s -o $2 $1
image/x-png PNG>BMP|$ecwsdpmi.exe\n$epng2bmp.exe -s -o $2 $1
I don't know why Michael loads cwsdpmi.exe before calling png2bmp since it
works fine anyway (all programs that use cwsdpmi.exe will first look in
memmory and then in current dir and then the path AFAIK).

Or more.

I know people don't want to hear this, but who is trying to use a 286 for
viewing JPGs anyway? I can understand someone who wants to use it for
surfing - but for actually viewing images?
The sollution seems simple to me, this test shows that 32-bit *can* be
faster than 16-bit. So a 32-bit version of core.exe might be able to work
faster (nothing can be guaranteed). And there's a 32-bit WATTCP IIRC. Still
this doesn't increase speed on an XT/AT.
>Thanks, Bernie. Now how do we get enough information about Arachne to be
>able to write some video drivers in ASM ?
Anyone who knows how to write such in ASM can give it a try, the lopif
package should be up now. (Hmm... no it isn't). You'll need to talk to
Michael about that. I could of course upload my older version but I'll have
to assume something's changed since Arachne 1.60b1 is faster in your test.
To get back to djpeg.exe I was wondering if perhaps it's stupid to remove
the diffrent dithering options - perhaps I should atleast test floating
point on some CPU that's very good at it (an AMD Athlon for instance - but
I don't know anyone that has such a beast).
Compiling with 486 code didn't seem to give me more speed (I need to invent
a better way to test here on my end - reducing time from 3 seconds isn't
easy). How do you do Clarence?
Perhaps I should start testing with the 386SX-16 that sits in between my
monitor and keyboard?

Hi Clarence & Bernie,
I tried DJPEG32 and found it converted
a jpeg to gif about twice as fast but it created a gif file
that was about 3 times as big as DJPEG16 creates. So, the
DJPEG32/gif took longer to read with Pictview than the
DJPEG16/gif. Picture quality looked equal.

I allways used Pegasus Mail 3.5 for DOS for all my email, because I did
not liked reading received mail with Arachnes Insight.
I like Pegasus because I can read with white and gray over a blue
background. This is much nicier to the eyes than white over black.
Today I came with a very good and simple solution for Insight:
I made a BLUE.BMP file with Windoze Paint. (puajjj..)
Then with Graphic WorkShop for DOS I croped it and convert it to BLUE.GIF.
The resulting file is very small, less than 1400 bytes.
If you want to change from black to blue background you must:
1)-Copy BLUE.GIF to Arachne main folder.
2)-Delete or rename PAPER.GIF (very important)
3)-Goto Arachne Desktop.
4)-Goto to Options.
5)-Goto to Preferences and Performance.
6)-In: Desktop background image write: BLUE.GIF and mark its small square.
7)-At the bottom of the page push: OK, save.
8)-Push: Use new settings.
If you do not delete or rename PAPER.GIF you can get mixed images.
Try it and let me know if it works for you.

I think that would be VERY useful. It would also help to remind you of
where Arachne spends most of her time. <g>
For timings under 5.0 sec (when I want to do a good job) I connect a
photodiode to an oscilloscope and stick it against the screen at some
place that will only change (or stop changing) when the job is done.
The status line is good in Arachne - near the user name. (or unregistered)

Hi all!!!
Well i downloaded the ms-dos version of djpeg (32-bit
version 6b (i'm not sure)) to replace the djpeg
16-bit version (that will lockup my 386 pc when
exeute it) and it works just fine... alone.
The problem is that the new version requires the next
mime line in mime.cfg (or something like)
type... JPG>BMP$edjpeg -bmp -colors 256 $1
- -OUTFILE $2
(the -outfile is the new addition in order to work
with arachne)
You can say:What's wrong??? well, the only wrong
thing that happen is that when i modify the mime.cfg
with any editor i have (e.com, edit.com, edit.exe)
and run arachne aagain, arachne will not reognize
anything, in fact, arachne says: save or...
unviewable file... even with txt files (HTML will not
be recognized) so...
Can someone tell me WHY??????????

Here are my results (off-line) with my 486DX4/100 36meg RAM, 3 meg
cache also cleared for each test. I use 800x600 resolution (not sure
about the color depth):
File: Size/Resolution DJPEG16 DJPEG32

chrstmas.jpg (71,185 bytes 800x600) 8 sec. 6 sec.
I was surprised that there was a much less improvement on the second
file, since it was not a great deal smaller. I wonder if the color
depth makes a difference in the times?

Wow.
I really dislike blue (or any other color) backgrounds.
I admit I don't much like HOT white (bright) on black, but
tempered white is fine.
Just goes to show that different folks need different strokes.<g>
And Arachne allows for LOTS of different strokes.
I hope it stays that way.
Nice job Alejandro !

I came with another good and simple solution for colors in Arachne
in general and Insight (not during editing a file, but it works
with reading):
1)-Edit arachne.cfg with your favorite texteditor.
2)-search in the section [misc] and edit the following entries:
BgColor #000080 (blue)
Text #c0c0c0 (silver)
Link #ffff00 (yellow)
Background Null (no background image)
3)-Save the file and exit your editor.
4)-Launch Arachne and look at your new color settings.
This way there are more colors available than if one uses the
options\preferences-dialog box.
These are the 16 standard colors in HTML:
VALUE NAME
#00ffff Aqua
#000000 Black
#0000ff Blue
#ff00ff Fuchsia
#808080 Gray
#008000 Green
#00ff00 Lime
#800000 Maroon
#000080 Navy
#808000 Olive
#800080 Purple
#ff0000 Red
#c0c0c0 Silver
#008080 Teal
#ffffff White
#ffff00 Yellow

My statemant about memory was not very clear...
What I _should_ have said was that no conv. memory was needed to switch
from codepage 437 to 850.
938 bytes of high memory were used for NLSFUNC.EXE

What advantages???
It's not Gates-ware.<g>
But seriously....
1) it is free for noncommercial use.
2) uses less memory
3) has password protection capabilities included
4) the DR-DOS disk cache (nwcache) works much better than smartdrv
5) it's cdrom access program (nwcdex) works better than mscdex
6) the mouse drive (drmouse) is much better [loads high automatically]
7) the text editor works much smoother
8) several utilities included are DR-DOS originals which have now been
copied by MS (xcopy, xdel, xdir, rendir... perhaps others that I'm
not remembering right now)
Other DR-DOS users here on the list are sure to chime-in.<g>

I can send the whole mess in one HUGE 5.2mb zip file if you'de like.
(of coarse with the per/min charges.. that one zip file would end-up
costing you about 100 bucks)<g>
