When I use my local ISP, the mailserver is on the same local network
as the gateway and other servers. Probably a few computers in the
same room.

When I use Freewwweb, the gateway is here in Ottawa (uunet.ca dialup),
while the mail and other servers are somewhere else on the Internet,
NYC I think. Any congestion on the route will slow down the smtp and
other connections.

Also, I imagine that the Freewwweb=smartworld.net mailservers can get
overloaded.

So far I've been fairly impressed with the free PPP access. I never
really expected mail and news to be all that hot to begin with. I
think that local decentralized servers are generally faster than big
centralized servers (free or otherwise).

Of course, none of this has anything to do with Arachne, does it?
