Dear list:
the body of the posting is attached to save time on telnet - which also
brings me to the point - Why wont telnet apm work in arachne 1.6b1?
I know I should get the sr version, but I was just surprised. I am thus
writing this out of version 1.4 which does run Telnet.

Dear list:
I thought I could explain a very user unfriendly aspect of Arachne.
This is a silly matter which often gets novices in a mess.
The backspace key fires up history - this seems pretty obvious and
sensible, but consider someone trying to edit a URL.

They get to the URL field with the pointer and hit backspace, before
focussing on that feild with mouseclick, tab or enter. Then they hold
 down the backspace key,
waiting for the URL feild to be erased. This fills up the
keyboard buffer with backspaces. Now if the history is a pretty big file
it can take ages to scroll on a slow machine, and doing that for ( what is
it 128 times) makes it preferable to hit the reset button and pay one local call
cost to the phone company!
This issue becomes far more critical if you are not using a mouse,
and have set the typematic rate to the maximum.
Often just a fumble between return and the key above it can cost you minutes of
"on line" time.
The " esc" key is unfriendly also but you can edit this in Preferences to
mean something innoccuous like "back". I have not found a way to edit or
disable the backspace key, and just have to be very careful about using
it, doing left arrow and then "del" as an alternative.
