--The Upgrade--
Lets see... here I am at my Tandy 486 DX-50, with 8 MB RAM, with
Arachne 1.60b1 installed and running. I have MS-DOS 6.22, and OFFLINE,
my ALT-M shows +126. I remember that 1.50 s.r.c. had 148, but it wasn't
as fast, etc. and besides, 126 is more than enough for my surfing needs.
The E-Mail in 1.60b1 works very well, so all in all I'm happy with
what I have.
What's this? A floppy disk with Arachne 1.60b2 on it?.
Just a minute while I install this. (I'll just save this E-Mail to
the outbox, and be right back!)
-----------------
OK, I'm back. What did that take, two minutes?
Noticed right away that the page load time display area was fixed.
That was about all I complained about in 1.60b1, so... since that's
fixed, I'll go surf some, and see how this puppy performs<g>. Be
right back after I check some of my favorite websites...
--------
OK, back again. Gets my
http://www.angelfire.com/ms/telegram/arachne.html page in five seconds?
On a 14.4 modem? Gee, I musta cheated. OK, Go Ahead and Confess. I
fetched the page, etc. and the "five seconds" was getting it outta
cache... Arachne does that nicely doesn't it? Try THAT in windows
browsers and see what kind of complaints you get<g>.
-------
Now, back to the task at hand. Try ALT-M again. 82! Where's my 126?
Maybe it has something to do with this long E-Mail I'm writing...
I know, I'll just send it, and... hmmm
Do you suppose 1.60b2 takes more memory? Maybe that's it. No problems,
though. Think I'll go look at my memory info and I'll be right back...
------
Hey, I forgot to save what I just typed. Anyway, Here it is again:
"I know, there is the 81K setup file in conventional memory, and if
I finish the setup by closing Arachne with ALT-X, then I'll get that
81K back..." Yep, that was it. I'm back to 126 (green) again. Whew!
Thought for a minute some more features had been added that I should
investigate to fully appreciate, etc.
Anyway, I'm happy to have my ALT-M 126KB again... Let me see, which
one of these computers to my left would like to try 1.60b2 next?
Don't all raise your hands at once!
Wait until 1.60 s.r.c. is out? Sure, why not.
