Hello Tom:
There is no such thing as VGA monochrome, because all VGA monitors are
either gray-scale or color monitors. All monochrome monitors are, by
definition, two bit displays (i.e. 1 or 0) Monochrome monitors are not
gray-scale monitors. In a monochrome monitor every pixel is either on
(white) or off (black) or amber and black, or green and black, and with
no intervening shades between the extremes. With a monochrome monitor it
is possible to have also two different intensity levels for the brightness
of some of the pixels in the same screen, but the intensity level, being
low or high, does not truly render shades of gray, although the illusion may
sometimes be slightly effective. A Hercules monochrome monitor may produce
an excellent illusion of gray-scale. This is done by varying the density
of the pixels, in a manner similar to that seen in a B&W newspaper
photograph. Neither has any true gray color. The relative densities of
the dots create the illusion.
VGA gray scale monitors are common, but they are not often seen with
home or office computing systems. You will see then frequently at
point-of-sale terminals at fast-food stores and also you will see them
used by bank tellers.
