Cristian -
Sorry it took so long for me to report back. Thanks to your input, I got
Arachne up and running using my DSL connection. As a refresher, I'm running
a peer-to-peer network in my home office using a 400 mhz Pentium as the main
"server" with a P166 and a 386sx-16 connected as clients. The DSL modem is
connected to the P400 and the access is shared through Sygate NAT (network
address translation) software. Both Pentiums use Windows 98 and the 386 is
non-Windows, using only DR-DOS 7.02 and Microsoft Networking (NetBeui).
I had to play with it for quite a while as none of the IP addresses I was
plugging into LANTCP.CFG were working for the Arachne box. As is the usual
case, I was being too complicated and discovered that if I made the IP for
the 386 192.168.0.2, where the IP for the "server" is 192.168.0.1,
everything works perfectly.
One thing I am disappointed in is that the speed doesn not seem much better
than with the dial-up modem, probably because the 386 is soooooo slow and
it's maxed out with 4 meg of RAM. I've got another 386 with a busted floppy
that I think has an 8 meg capacity, so I might dig it out and see if I can
replace the floppy and transfer Arachne over to it. Maybe a bit more RAM
will speed things up a bit.
Again, thanks Cristian. And also thaks to everyone on this list. Over the
last two years it has been a source of valuable information for me.
Later,
Richard Burckhardt
