/NUMHANDLES is a switch you can add to your HIMEM.SYS command in 
config.sys. Since you say your are recently using QEMM, I am not sure 
if or how to add this to the equivalent command in QEMM. I am of 
course using MSDOS 6.22, so I am not sure this applies to MSDOS 5.00 
either. HTH.
