Dear List (and Bart if you ever turn on your computer again):
I appreciated Ms Bests considered reaction to suicidal intent.
Having lived with a suicidal systems engineer for 5 years and inherited
things from suicide notes I feel the matter is far from simple.
While thinking that there is no meaning to life, and that most of the
depressives around have a more rational grip on reality than the happy
and adjusted, I think that many who suicide give up too early and fail
to fix things which make them unhappy because happines is just as
incredible to the depressed as suicide is to the happy. Bart, you must
be rational enough to allow the possibility of happiness - that
irrationality which seems sufficient to keep an all too many of us
alive!
Yes, when Oliver suicided he left me a 486dx2 which gave me some insight
into his condition - I replaced everything in it and it kept falling
over! Me, I yell and scream and throw floppies on the floor. Well they
just plain dont work! Dammed invention they are. I have written about
20Kb so far on why! Apart from dirt, scratches, viruses, variations in
tracking, formatting, etc, my current theory is that in our usually 100%
humidity, the lubricant on the disk surface goes mouldy. The symptom is
that they shriek, stall, and the drive as well as the disk are
thereafter dysfunctional. I am playing with teflon lubricated ones.
Has anyone else theories on these?
