Places I want to go I can't get to ... not because of DNS problems but
because Arachne absolutely refuses to even contact DNS if port 80 is
part of the URL alphanumeric code. :<

Maybe you might want to give us some examples to try with Arachne? Usual http
port is 80, but sometimes an http URL has a different port. ftp is usually
port 21.
