Dear Kali,
here the same problem and to solve it I use several options.
I use 3 different printers:
b/w 24 needles NEC P2200
b/w XEROX J5 = Deskjet 500
color HP 1200
Window 95 (Paintbrush) can drive XEROX and HP but only .jpg or .bpm
DOS is used with 'pictureview' a german program to print, see and
convert about 20 different formats like .gif .jpg .tif etc.
CSHOW is good for printing (DOS) but can only handel .gif and some .tif
types.
So I'am fiddeling between the programs just to print a picture.

The problem is of course that the number of different printers is
endless and every month the industry introduces a new type.
The newer the printer the worser the documentation...

NEC issued a big manual filled with details wich enable you to write
your own printer driver, including lots of examples of programming.

XEROX gave some information but not enough to write your own driver.
Some drivers were in the package on floppy disk.

HP gave just the information you need to put the paper and the ink in,
but added a few drivers to use the printer with windows.

When I let my photographs develop at the drugstore I always order the
pictures on paper AND on floppy disk.
The floppy contains the pictures in .jpg format and a program to view
and I believe it is possible to print them too... I will look at that in
a few days. This may be of help.
