if yes than ping a local computer's IP.
(you will need ping.exe and a correctly configured wattcp.cfg)
(I can send you ping.exe by mail)
Than try to ping an outside internet host. (eg ping www.yahoo.com)
If this works than the network is reachable and dns works.
PS: Your guru is not right ... if the network works under any TCP/IP stack,
it will also work in DOS !!!
You only need IP/netmask/gateway/dns configured correctly.
