>> Don't most email clients convert an ordinary URL into a hypertext link?

I believe that most do. Many do not. The following email clients
*do not* convert URLs into hypertext links:

1. Net-Tamer
2. Barebones DOS email system
3. NetMail
4. SMTP.EXE

If anyone knows of any others that do not, I would appreciate your adding
them to the list, to include even some Windows clients, if such exist.

NetMail is just an SMTP and POP3 program, not a reader at all. I believe the
same is true of SMTPOP and Barebones DOS email system, which is based on SMTPOP.
Popclient for OS/2 and Unix is just a mail downloader with no reading function.

For an email client to convert URLs into hypertext links, it would seem
necessary for that email client to be integrated with a browser, as is the case
with Arachne. I would like to see if the latest Netscape or Mozilla has that
capability, and how a file must be named to be recognized as such by Netscape or
Mozilla.

There is a newsgroup on DOS mail and news programs: comp.os.msdos.mail-news
I haven't been there yet but just readied the software for my next news
download.

There is also a Web site http://newsreaders.com/
I haven't been there either but intend to.
