0. I have been using occasionally Arachne 1.53 beta2 whose strong point
is its ability to D/L very long html docs, neither IE5 nor IE5+Netscape
patch were able to do. All experiences were made on a 350MHz Pentium II,
32MB RAM, NO RamDisk, 56k PCI (internal) modem normal phone line to ISP,
W95B OS Arachne in DOS Box; Himem, SP keyboard driver, CP 850 screen
driver in memory, Mouse driver from Window$.
1. DLoaded archn165.exe (w/IE5), expanded it in a new directory and called
SETUP resulting that the automatic modem detector was now able to
inform twice (modem responded OK) the presence of internal modem at COM3,
INT4 BUT... Arachne PPP Wizard replied that "no modem was detected". I
have to say that older versions of detector did never find modem. So I
entered manually in Wizards window desired data and tried to log to ISP
unsuccessfully; edited ARACHNE.CFG finding that number 4 was missing
after INT. Now I could log in and go to your homepage but it did not
load completely (memory counter 36KB in red, before it was ~70KB green).
Found scrolling smooth, your homepage DL fast as accostumed by IE5 and
could DL mail.
2. Will reread Clarences ARAMDISK.TXT which is enlightening, having
following comments to make:
2.1 In his SPIDER.BAT (I did not write down the exact positions) the
"Jump To, after condition" colons should be placed as prefixes and not
as suffixes.
2.2 Suggestion: instead of "name of drive" use "letter of drive".
(Perhaps, for dummies like me, could you insert somewhewre in your text
QUOTE before installing Arachne do make a small RamDisk, as explained,
reboot and write down the LETTER your Operating System assigns to that
drive. This letter you will use instead of RD characters in instructions
which follow UNQUOTE.)
3. Other sites showed only the page background, well my mem indicator was
in red, but ver. 1.43 never had this problem, will recheck anyway.
4. The advanced installation for 1.64 allows for "Extended file names" or
something similar, I selected this feature and nothing happened even when
checking VFAT in ARACHNE.CFG. Any comments on this?
5. I like the editing easyness in Arachne. Is it possible to "Search and
Replace" with this editor or must we use an external one?
6. Is it posible to change color of the directory-drawer icons? since blue
for htm docs and blue for drawers forces one to look twice while disk
navigating.
