The designer most probably wanted a bullet and a long dash where those
characters occur in Arachne.

I suppose we should get to grips with the TrueType font converter and
make a font distribution to cater for our needs/wants. I believe Windows
browsers use a 20% difference between font sizes. I really would like to
have separate control over the font size for directory listings, now that
the smaller font has been introduced.

The attached page shows what characters are, or more likely, are not
supported. Would folks prefer an Arial or Times New Roman font?

Title: Entity Test

Non-conformant character entities

Glenn (Wizard57M), Pete and I have recently mentioned the substitution by accented characters in webpages. The ones affected seem to all lie in the range ‚ to Ÿ. This collection contains some essential characters (depending on your point of view) - but they are not formally defined by the HTML standard.

I'm pleased to see `rachne 1.66 displaying left and right bold double curly quotes, but the non-bold and singular varieties aren't there (yet). Wiz and Pete had come across websites sensibly using • as a bullet-point, instead of a graphic, but `rachne still doesn't recognize this.

Taking a deep breath, I'm about to launch into listing these non-conformant characters, so users may see what they're missing (or getting) from the browser version they use. This page could be improved by the inclusion of images of the characters, but I hope the descriptions will suffice. For browsers with a choice of proportional font, you should select a serif type e.g. Times New Roman, to fully appreciate the curliness of the quotes. Note that I've had to make them bold above for Arachne1.66 to display `em - there's nowt there with 1.64 :-(
