OK, one step at a time ...

I am using DOS 5.0 for Command/io/sys
I am using setver from DOS 5.0
I am using Himem & EMM386 & MemMaker from DOS 6.22
I *was* using smartdrv.sys from DOS 5.0
I will be *removing* DOS 6.22 smartdrv.exe from config
I am currently using DOS 6.22 smartdrv.exe in Autoexec
Since it didn't stop the lost segments showing up, I will be
removing smartdrv.exe from autoexec and reinserting ncache
The only time I shell under the NIC configuration is when I use ALT-E to
shell from Arachne or when I load Norton Commander [it sets itself up in
its own shell], or when I shell out from my editor. I do not run
Arachne from any shell, nor from within any other program.
I would *like* to run it on DESQview, but have never succeeded in being
able to get it to run successfully -- possibly because I never could get
the batch file type setup sequenced correctly.
Prior to going to cable modem / NIC setup, I ran Arachne in a pure DOS
5.0 environment, with the exception being that I was using Ncache rather
than smartdrv. As you may recall, the problem of chains lying around
existed then also.
I can provide copies of the applicable config.sys/autoexec.bat if you'd
like.
I can't help you with NS or CuteFTP ... and I have a problem with
Windoze 3.1 myself -- a call to a non-existant hyperlink which I can't
find to remove. <G>
