Clarence:

>Well, I think you should have the sheriff's position but you
will have to thrash that out with Jake.<

Jake also thinks I should be sheriff.

>Keep in mind tho that quick replies shouldn't rate the same
scrutiny as dissertations cuz we just can't go running to the
dictionary every time we want to get an idea across. Are there
too many esses in dissertation? <

That won't wash. Glenn had the time to concoct three
different permutations of the paragraph in question. That's
hardly "quick and dirty" to my mind.

This was hardly dissertation- (you spelled it correctly)
level scrutiny. These are elementary rules for English useage,
rules that ought to have been learned in school. Comparable
sloppiness is unacceptable in programming. Why is it acceptable
in written language?

Why not develop the habit of checking a dictionary from time
to time? It's what they're for, after all. But the basis of my
comments wouldn't be found in a dictionary, anyway -- but rather
a grammar handbook.

Pete:

>Hey, THX! I had always wondered about that! The subject has even
come up on AQC...<

And nobody thought to look it up in a grammar handbook?

>Nah... Sherrif!<

Hm. That's three votes for sheriff... Where do I pick up my
badge?
