Michael, I installed DOS 5.00 to one of my boxes about 1 month ago and had
no trouble at all. But, as you say above, I never ran it even ONCE in the
default condition. I didn't even LOOK at the default condition, I just added
my own config.sys and autoexec. 

After reading your post, I immediately did a default re-install of MS-DOS 5
and son of a B#%$&!! TEMP was set to C:\DOS !!
This is absolutely _incredibly_ STUPID from so MANY points of view !!

ARACHNE is NOT the problem here ! The default MS-DOS 5 install is !

Michael. I don't think it is necessary to got to that extreme.
Just eliminate the possibility of using a preexisting "TEMP" and use 
ARACHNETEMP only. If the user wants to point ARACHNETEMP to C:\DOS maybe
you should let them - ONLY if they enter that themselves. 

This fixes the problem and makes the code shorter, NOT longer.
