I apparently am cursed. I've never before had any SMTP lock-ups with
Arachne. But someone opened his mouth ...
Today I had a lockup when I attempted to send an e-mail; Arachne froze
at the point where SMTP had sent the "sender OK" message.
When I rebooted I went to the SMTP.LOG file to see what happened. Well,
first I got an error message from my Norton Commander: Sector not
found! abort/try again. I tried again, and the smtp.log file which was
brought up was an *old* one, two messages prior to the e-mail I was
sending at lockup time!
So I collected clusters, with two files resulting. One of the files
started the smtp.log from the last successfully sent message [not the
produced when I tried to view it the first time.]
The other file created started out with the smtp.log of the lock-up and
finished with bits and pieces of arachne.pck [?]
I tried to import it as text, but this is all that Insight would allow
to come into the message:
220 mail2.go-concepts.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.10.0/8.10.0; Thu, 24 Aug 2000
19:53:59 -0400
HELO go-concepts.com
250 mail2.go-concepts.com Hello ip208.2.209.115.go-concepts.com [208.2.209.115],
pleased to meet you
MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
250 2.1.0 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Sender ok
I was going to bring in the actual file, using an independent editor outside
of Arachne. However, I found that both binary code I couldn't understand
and long lines [over the 250 character limit I have set as default on this
editor] made putting it "in the clear" very questionable. And since
attachments are now "not acceptable on the list" the only way I can safely
share the file with anyone who *might* learn something from it is via
attachment to private e-mail. :< The file is 2,048 bytes -- one sector --
in size, and it contains at least one item that doesn't belong to the
current configuration of Arachne at all [shotlist.htm is part of "stewart"
configuration which I haven't used since *before* I last collected and
deleted cluster files].
Anyone who really wants to know what might be causing these problems, and
who knows enough to be able to maybe make sense of the dumb file, is
welcome to ask for it and I'll send it private.

P.S. Today I finally figured out what the problem with InSight is, that
makes 'AOL type active links' look screwed up on the InSight screen. The
software looks only for http:// or mailto:// and then automatically adds an
<g;A in front of the http part and &rtg;/A at the end of the URL ... so,
although it works if you click right, it looks totally all wrong on the
screen with InSight. A decision tree needs to be added so that first
search for http etc and then search for pre-existing start and end A tags.
If the a tags are found, Arachne doesn't need to add anything; if not found
then Arachne can do its thing the way it does now.
If you're having a hard time figuring out what I'm talking about, hit F-4
right now and scan down the code to my signature. Look at all the stuff
InSight added to a perfectly workable active href link. Maybe that is what
Arachne can search for in decision tree?? the existance of "href" ??
