Hi All;
I've been having a lot of trouble with one of my ISPs. They seem to be
up, or partially up, only 70% of the time. I've found it useful to "ping"
them before trying any other type of contact because of the wait times
involved. Netscape will try to get my mail for a minute before telling
me the server doesn't have a DNS entry.
The "ping" tells me this in 3 secs.
I tried to ping with Arachne (yes I knew it wasn't listed as supported)
without success.
Arachne supports "finger" but it is not a particularly useful protocol
because of variations in the way the remote end handles finger, if it
does at all.
Ping, on the other hand, is apparantly almost universal and provides a
lot of diagnostic info. Try a Google search on ping for general info.
It would be nice if Arachne supported ping, but while it doesn't, you
can use this fantastic service: http://www.fifi.org/services/ping-eng.html
Why is it fantastic ? It LOOKS like it belongs to Arachne !!!
The only reason one might want a built-in ping is if they had a LAN
to test and wanted to ping their own machines. <g>
