Hi Neil:

Certainly an external one is OK. As far as I know, all external modems
are real modems. Many internal modems are real modems, especially older
ones. Modems that are not real ones are described in the product literature
by phrases such as "designed especially for Windows", "Plug-and-Play",
"Win-Modem", "Incorporates Host-System Processing Technology". If you have
a real modem, either new or used, then any brand should work. Try to get
one that comes complete with a user's manual. If you don't have a user's
manual you might spend many hours in trial-and-error experiments trying to
figure out the proper jumper settings for the right combination for com port
number and irq number. If you do have a manual you should study very
thoroughly the sections dealing with these matters. Try to get a modem
made by a company that is still in the business of manufacturing modems.

Several modem manufacturers are out of business. For this reason you would
find it very difficult to find any support or other information on them
on the web. Right now I can think of two very-well known modem
manufacturers that are out of business: Practical Peripherals and
Cardinal Technologies.

Good luck, and all the best,

Sam Heywood
