Neil,

Before you go off buying modems that you may not need, it might help if you
provided some more information to the list about your system, whether you are
running pure DOS or trying to run Arachne from a DOS window? What does your
ARACHNE.CFG file look like (post it but xxxx out your password, which may be
in several places)?

On this system (a Gateway P75 running MS-DOS 6.22) I have an internal 33.6
modem (Best Data) that I got from CompUSA for, IIRC, under $10. I think that
I had to set the Com port (Com 2) on the modem with a jumper and disable Com
2 built in my motherboard by modifying the CMOS setup.

List members have responded to many questions with respect to modems, so it
may become second nature to suggest that you have a Win(non)modem, or that
you are experiencing Com 3 problems, before looking closely into the
symptoms. If you don't have a Win(non)modem, maybe we can get you running
without you putting out bucks.

How can you tell if you have a Win(non)modem? I don't know, but the first
thing that I would do would be to open the case and look at the modem. It
might say on the modem what it is, or it might indicate the manufacturer and
model. Then you can go to their web site and see what it is. If you can't
find a manufacturer's name, you certainly should be able to find a FCC number
and going to the FCC web site and entering the FCC number will tell you who
manufactured the modem.

With a little patience, I think that we can collectively help you.

Good Luck!

purchase. From some of the sites I have visited, it seems that Arachne
will run fine with a 14.4 modem. Should I go for the faster modems?
