Despite people thinking otherwise, I happen to believe that there are a
number of people out there using dozerware who would be glad to find
Arachne.
How many two year old laptops [well maybe 5 year old] can run the
current doze-browsers? What about the older 'hand held' systems? I
need a "portable" computer; trips to hospital and around the country
camping [motel?? YOU gonna pay the bills?!] have left me gritting my
teeth trying to write with pen & paper, trying to get thoughts together.
I need a computer I can take with me anywhere. But I don't have the
thousands of dollars necessary to acquire a 'think pad' or the newer
notebook computers. If I can find an older one cheap though, I can
clean dozeware off & load in the DOS programs I use now and have some
room to spare for storage.
How many people out there have older portable systems that can't hold
what Win9x requires? And how many of them simply cannot justify tossing
the old portable out and spending money on something new that will
probably be outdated in 6 months anyway?? If they could drop back to
DOS and run Arachne, they could once again plug-in at the motel where
they stay on trips. For *some* business people, salesmen, etc. it could
mean the difference between getting by and getting ahead.
I have neighbors that finally did without a lot of things to get "an
internet computer" up and running; they had to sacrifice just to get the
parts & software [my son did all the labor & installs free]. They did
it because they are homeschooling their daughter, and FULL internet
access simply was not available with the old DOS system, even if they'd
installed Arachne. No javascript, no secure webpages ... and you can't
even sign up on-line for the ACT & SAT without secure webpage ability.
However, if Arachne had been a bit further "down the road" they could
have saved an awful lot of money and bought a lot more clothing from the
stores rather than used from Goodwill.
I'm very glad there is Arachne. Every time I start putting money aside
to get something new, something old needs repair. Yesterday, 2 blocks
from my house, an electrical short circuit killed my truck; I got lucky,
in that I'd already started the turn onto the side street, and had
enough momentum to coast uphill a ways and pull straight into an available
parking spot. Since I have AAA the tow to the mechanic was free. But
all my savings will be spent finding & fixing the problem... I literally
cannot live without transportation. And I'm one of the lucky people,
with a guaranteed income every month. One thing's fer shure, I won't be
shopping for used laptops on the auctions any time soon.
