Why not use a "disk manager" program?
I had the same problem with my Dell 486. I installed my Seagate
1.2GB disk with their software which remaps the heads and cylinders
to keep the BIOS happy... works like a charm.
I use a similar program on another machine with a Quantum HD.
Check the website of your HD manufacturer for similar software.
