Why not use a "disk manager" program?
I had the same problem with my Dell 486. I installed my Seagate
1.2GB disk with their software which remaps the heads and cylinders
to keep the BIOS happy... works like a charm.
I use a similar program on another machine with a Quantum HD.
Check the website of your HD manufacturer for similar software.

Ontrack's "Disk Manager" was provided with my Western Digital 540 MB hard
drive when I bought it several years ago and my experience has been the same
as Mike's. But, you have to remember to uninstall Disk Manager if you
upgrade your computer and transfer *all* your files. A colleague forgot
about this and his new computer was down for a couple of weeks until he
figured it out.
Promise has a card, "DriveMax" which fits in an ISA slot and will permit you
to access up to 128 GB Ultra EIDE hard drives. $17.00+/- EIDE connectors
must be on the motherboard or on another card.
