A little more than 10 years ago, in the spirit of payback, I bought Norton's
Utilities (advanced editon) because I had been happily using his "borrowed"
utilities for several years. Very little of the new stuff got transferred
to my HD because I was even MORE paranoid about disk space then, and if I
was happy with a 5kb program, why replace it with a 9kb version ?

Those are the sizes of the 1985 and 1998 versions of FILESIZE (FS) which
list the sizes, %slack (due to cluster size) and total usage for all spec'd
files in a directory.

Turns out that the 9kb version which never got loaded, can also go down the
tree and list individual totals for each subdirectory. This isn't quite as
nice as it sounds because it doesn't give a "trunk" total - but it is VERY
easy to use.

"DU" on the other hand, lists the individual totals for each subdir and the
shocking total of ALL subdirs in the ARACHNE branch - but you have to be
lucky enough to have a Linux manual available to figure out how to use it
because it does nothing useful without the switches.

Hey, it works tho. <G>

At: http://www.simtelnet.iteso.mx/pub/simtelnet/msdos/ in dirutils I found
Filesize.zip which contains a 6.5kb mimic of Norton's "FS" and has the same
limitation as above - plus the output is more verbose.

I also found JB_DU13.zip containing a 9kb DOS du version which seems to work
well, gives the required overall totals, and is easy to use as it comes with
a small .DOC and has only one (or so) switch.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
