I take VISA, MasterCard, bank cheque and Australian bank notes for certain.
Cheapest for you would be VISA or MasterCard. Most expensive would be
electronic funds transfer. If I received a personal cheque in any other
currency, including US dollars, I would return it with a copy of the original
invoice.
US banknotes would be OK, but there is a risk of it going missing in
transit. This was the crux of my own problem initially - my first money
order never got to Michael and was not presented by anyone else in 5
months (I did check). Getting a refund that was usable was the when it
got out of hand.

If you are in the USA, then Western Union money order in a registered
envelope.

This is when it starts to get expensive, because there seems to be
little or no alternative to our greedy banks.

I am starting to feel that there may be some merit in the
international networking of people who trust each other, at least some
of which can handle credit card transactions.

You sort of have a bit better access to US banknotes than I do.
It is not a simple matter to get hold of non-Australian currency here.
