your "Arachne Minimalist" is one of the most helpful pieces of
internet. Thank you for your latest instructions on speeding up my
hard disk. It was only a very short time since I had run defrag.exe
when I read your "clanek-id53" contribution on Arachne's homepage:
"use Norton's Speedisk (SD) to defrag and optimize your disk.
Don't say yeah, yeah I defragged my disk last week or, no big deal,
I can defrag anytime"
So I did not say "yeah, yeah..." but knew that if you tell me to
do so there is certainly some reason for it. I immediately got SD
from a Russian FTP site and won 25% of HD speed - with the help
of your diskstuff.txt and speedchk.bat. The figures:
speedchk.bat utility running on HD 1,6 GB (400 kB free)
with Pentium 160
with cache disabled:
10 buffers: 1:22, 1:42 total
15 buffers: 1:03, 1:17 total <- I kept this
20 buffers: 0:59, 1:22 total
with 15 buffers enabled cache:
512 kB cache: 0:41, 0:42 total
1024 kB cache: 0:22, 0:23 total
2048 kB cache: 0:20, 0:21 total <- I kept this
4096 kb cache: 0:19, 0:20 total
- and after running speedisk: 0:15, 0:16 total!
