Don't know how Compu$erve does it, but for most ISP's running on *NIX type
of system, if they allow anonymous ftp access, then it's fairly easy to
get hold of a user list.
I have one email address on my ISP that I use strictly for incoming mail.
Mainly I use it to send stuff from my office to my home. I have never
posted to any newsgroup or mailing list from it, nor advertised it on a
web page. Yet it sometimes gets spammed.
