And I said I would test.
After first setting virtual screens at 1200 lines and finding that was
enough for the Preferences page, I tested Arachne 1.62, 1.66 and 1.67
many many times, back and forth between options and preferences and
the Preferences screen went virtual EVERY time at 1200 lines. I also
made many screenshots, but I'm sure that seeing the status message:
"Generating virtual screen" was proof enough.
I tried 640x480 in 256 colors and 1025x768 in 32k colors and got a
virtual screen every time in all the versions.
Two other factors we might consider here are available XMS memory
and available disk space.
On my test P90 I have 16384K of memory, and use 6144K for a ramdisk
and have a 660K cache. Arachne is NOT on the ramdisk - just TEMP.
My available XMS outside of Arachne is 8164K according to QEMM.
Using Arachne 1.62 in 640x480x256 colors, I was showing USED XMS as
2421kb on the Preferences screen and the .BMP was 705,078 bytes.
It took Arachne 16 sec to write the temporary .BMP file with my P90.
The USED XMS in A1.66 at the same screen was 1453kb.
Using Arachne 1.62 in 1024x768x32768 colors, I was showing USED XMS
as 3959kb on the Preferences screen and the .BMP was 3.370454 MEGAbytes.
It took Arachne 40 sec to write the temporary .BMP file with my P90.
The USED XMS in A1.66 at the same screen was 2996kb.
Please compare your USED XMS with the known AVAILABLE XMS and, if
running on a ramdisk, check available diskspace after writing one
of those BMPs.
