First of all a Happy New Millenium to you all!
Sorry I've been off the air for some time. I've been very busy
installing and configuring Linux Red Hat 6.1 on my system.
First application I have installed was (despite all Michael's
warnings), Arachne v1.66b. It installed nicely in /opt/Arachne directory
and put a startup script in /usr/bin. Also created an .Arachne subdir in
my home directory where I could find the Arachne.conf and the cache.
No need to setup anything related to the Internet connection. In Linux
these settings apply globally (needless to say I spent a couple of days
trying to figure up how to install my modem, tweak the PPP
interface, masquerade the e-mail account, how to use sendmail and
fetchmail and so on). Folks, using Linux with some plain dial-up account
is like cutting one leg and one arm out of Linux.
I have to say Arachne seems to be a bit faster in Linux than in Dos!
The screen refreshes quicker, the pages are rendering faster. But,
unfortunately is only a pre-release. It seems it does not respond to
Ctrl+Z, there is no Insight yet, lacks lots of options and there are a few
bugs, too. Michael says in the documentation that was only 55% done.
But, from what I have seen, it looks *very* promising and, forgive me,
but I must say that Linux offers to Arachne a brighter future than Dos.
