Hmmm... I've never run it without a mouse being "active."

You should have a default path set to at least /usr/bin,
/usr/local/bin and /bin. Check with the 'env' command.

The "." preceding a file makes it a "hidden" file.
Most .*rc, *.ini, *.conf and *.config files that reside in
user space are hidden.
RH has a .bashrc and .bash_profile in each user's home
directory, .bash_profile being the one where any necessary
additions to the path are made.

Root often has a longer path set than ordinary users do.
