The DOS program loader doesnt care about the extension, but only of the first "tag" in the begining of the file. This is why you can rename .COM to .EXE, and .EXE to .COM and still have them working perfectly ok. Windows, on the other hand.. I have no idea what happens there once you choose a file to load. But it looks like you can do some renaming as well, if you can move a .EXE file as a .SCR file.
