Port issues are a frequent cause of being unable to connect with
Arachne. Perhaps the easiest way around this is to use the instalation
wizard provided. It includes a utility that attempts to locate the
modem properly. However, it is not always sucessfull.

Some BIOS's incorrectly report base port addresses if there is a gap
in there sequence--for instance if the modem is on port 4 with nothing
on port 3.

In the past there was a great deal of discussion on the list regarding
this problem.

A number of diagnostic utilities are available to help with this
problem. One collection worked for me was: the CTS Serial Port
Utilities, available from http://www.comminfo.com. This package
can identify and solve most comm port problems. Shareware.

Tell them to try the wizard first. It should work in most cases. Most
ISP's now accept automatic logins so all that has to be done is enter
a working phone number, userid, password, and DNS number in the blanks
provided. In most cases a script or manual login will not be required.

The installation of Arachne can really be as simple as that.
