With all the talk about smiley faces and munged arachne.cfg files, I
decided to check *my* arachne.cfg file before I did anything else after
downloading the mail.
And guess what -- smiley faces.
I went to my history list and reviewed it carefully, to see if I'd done
*anything* that might have caused arachne.cfg to rewrite itself. A
search of all 256 lines showed nothing except mail tossing, mail
management, and surfing.
Then I realized that I *had* done one thing that was "non-standard" ...
and it seems to fit with WHERE the smiley faces are residing: A couple
of days ago I went to Options and deselected autoload images.
The area of my Arachne.cfg which was overwritten had to do with image
handling:
UseCID Yes
UseCDescr No
AltSysFont 0
Index *.htm <-- overwritten or deleted
FontShift 0 <-- overwritten or deleted
Multitasking Safe <-- overwritten or deleted
XMS4allGIFs 8192 <-- overwritten or deleted
;XMS4allGIFs 4096 <-- overwritten or deleted
XMS4oneGIF 1048576 <-- overwritten or deleted
;XMS4oneGIF 1040000
I copied my ACF back over to Arachne.cfg, which put me back on
autoload images YES, then went to Options & deselected autoload images.
I was hoping that when I then checked arachne.cfg it would be munged,
but it is pristine.
I wish the history list were truly valid ... I know it omits stuff done
in InSight, I know it omits some href's followed, and I *don't* know
what else it omits. :<
We need to narrow down where the flawed overwrite occurs, and I'll be
darned if I know how to do that when we can't log everything we do. I
am going to try to check my arachne.cfg file each time I exit Arachne
[to shell or alt-X] and maybe I can narrow down the field.
Is anyone else willing to do the same thing?
To everyone else running 1.70 -- It would be a good idea to make
certain you have a clean "to your specs" personal ACF file, and have
your personal batch file, which you use to start Arachne, copy that
clean ACF to arachne.cfg each time you run Arachne.
Me? I have to change my normal boot-up batch file so it *doesn't* put
in a clean copy of arachne.cfg each time. Probably the only reason I
caught the smiley faces this time is that I'm still using the FD
"trouble shoot" diskette to boot to Arachne, and it *doesn't* install a
clean ACF each time.
