Thanks very much Christof.
I have now been able to try NDN and can confirm that it is based on
the DOS Navigator, but quite a bit has been changed.
NDN 2.02 is a big improvement over DN 1.51 in that it doesn't require
a mouse driver to be loaded just to run. But it still has a lot of
mousey bits that clutter the visual field.
NDN looks nice and the colors are user configureable if you are patient.
There are a large number of items that may be individually colored to
please the user, but you must do the following:
1) Find the "secret" (unmarked) F10 function, which is F9 in all the
other commanders.
2) Select options.
3) Select configuration.
4) Select colors
5) Select the item you want to change.
6) Select color.(again)
7) Select the foreground/background colors.
8) Hit enter.
And it all disappears and you have to go to step 1 for the next item.
One might put up with this if it was this easy, but it seems NDN has a
bad memory, and only a few of the changes get written to disk, even tho
you finally get everything set the way you think you want it.
I included all the detail above so I might say how Volkov Commander
differs here. The separate VCsetup program allows you to select colors,
shows you each component as you are changing it, and permits you to
make all the changes you wish at once, without any rodentlike behavior.
NDN is superior to VC however, in the programmability of the detail you
can display on the screen. You can see individual filesizes in the main
panels plus the total directory size and free disk space in the mini-
panels, for instance, and you can also color code filenames according
to their extensions ala Midnight Commander.
All in all I am sure that NDN is the filemanager that many would prefer,
as it supports LFNs and does an awful lot more than I would want from a
filemanager. I will stick with VC even tho it is slow compared to DC.
Did you read that Michael ? Sometimes, a little is enough. <G>
BTW, NDN crashed solid when I did chkdsk at the commandline. I wanted
to see how much space it was taking, and typing chkdsk is easier than
wandering all over the place looking for it.
Finally, Christof, thank you for using .ZBMs - I hope they were smaller
than .GIFS. You should see if you can get your ISP to set the filetype
to image/x-zbitmap. They came down as text plain. I will see if Michael
might consider giving priority to file extension instead of filetype.
BTW2, I see you use the Arachne "frame" I also prefer.;-)
