Ray:
   I can sympathize with you.  For the past month, I've been trying to
get Arachne 1.69 to connect to my ISP with the same results.  My ISP
has offered BBS service and I've been (and right now) using it for
e-mail, but when I try to connect as a browser, I fall into his BBS
mode.  For some reason, the ISP doesn't recognize that I'm trying to
connect via PPS.
