This is how I understand things, although I am more familiar with
the offline readers.

Snews, like Yarn and Cross Point (shareware for DOS) are offline
readers. For NNTP, news articles (or headers) are downloaded
using an nntp transport program and then imported into a message
base that the particular newsreader understands, using an import
program. MultiMail (SOUP) and rnr (Waffle) are also of this type.

Snews normally uses Ka9q for nntp transport, while Yarn and Cross
Point normally use uka_ppp (NOS-BOX), although it is possible to
mix and match.

PC-Pine and Trumpet (shareware) are online newsreaders. The news
articles are read over NNTP while still connected to the news
server. Lynx386 also works this way.

I'm not sure, but I believe that Minuet (and Net-Tamer) are
basically offline news readers, although all three functions
(nntp, import, reader) are built into one program.
