Hi L.D. and list,
after I did not succeed with MINUET for newsgroup support
I discovered shareware program Trumpet. I use it as add-
on for Arachne.
When you look for a download you will find different versions. The
development for DOS stopped in mid-1990ies (later versions exist
for Windows). I use
Trumpet Version 1.06 Revision A
-------------------------------
Trumpet is an NNTP news reader for MS-DOS machines.
The following files are included in the zip file.
readme - this file
news.exe - executable of trumpet for packet driver
news.prm - a blank parameter file
newsdoc.txt - a generic text printer documentation file
newsdoc.ps - a postscript printer documnetation file
newsabi.exe - Trumpet ABI version
newslwp.exe - LAN WorkPlace for DOS version
newsdpmi.exe - DPMI version for packet driver
rtm.exe - Borland International DPMI manager (required for
newsdpmi)
dpmi16bi.ovl - Borland International DPMI library (required for
newsdpmi)
Its main advantages:
- speed (navigation by hotkeys although mouse is supported)
- the program is highly customizable.
Disadvantages (as far as I experienced):
- one hotkey clears the complete list of newsgroups and starts a
complete new download from news server.
- memory limitation when loading a complete list from server.
I recommend the program, because problems can be easily
fixed with batch files and editing the INI file.
How to install it together with Arachne:
- put all files into a subdirectory under Arachne
- write a trumpet.ook, eg.:
- link trumpet.ook to a hotkey (eg. ShiftF7)
@echo off
i: -> got to drive and
cd \connect\trumpet directory where the program is
newsdpmi.exe -myipp=bootp -> with this parameter Arachne's
connection can be used by Trumpet
l: -> return to drive and
directory of Arachne core.exe
I like this program, but I do not know those email clients supporting
newsgroups.
