Following up on the recent questions about Minuet:
Last public release was 18A. (There was a 19A sent to registered users.
It was buggy beyond belief.)
18A was the first (not counting short-lived "preview" versions 17x and
17y) to include what was at the time a decent web browser, although today
it is pretty much useless for that purpose.
If you use Stacker or comparable software disk compression, then you
cannot use the News functions of 18A. Use 17A instead.
If you are not using disk compression, you might like the multitasking
features of 18A. For example, you could read or write news or email while
downloading a file via ftp in the background.
But you don't need Minuet or any other news client to read and post Usenet
news msgs. You can do it with Arachne, courtesy of a couple of very good
web sites.
One is http://groups.google.com . It applies the google search engine to
Usenet newsgroups. You can read just about any group, or search Usenet
for keywords just as the regular google searches web pages.
For posting, try http://newsone.net . It's amazing for a one-man
operation. You can read msgs in a very large number of newsgroups, and
you can post replies or new msgs also.
It uses a password system to prevent being exploited by spammers.
The first time you write a msg, NewsOne will email you a password to be
used on all subsequent posts. It will also send you a URL. You open that
URL and insert your password. You can also enter an "alternate email
address" so that your actual email address is not harvested by spammers.
After the first post, you can enter your password when you write the msg,
and it gets posted immediately. (Just make darn sure you put something
into that "alternate address" field.)
No javastink or any such nonsense. Works great with Arachne.
