nearly ... windows Me fits into the win 9x catehory, but M$ tried better to
hide DOS there. (You need a patch to boot into DOS)
Win NT, 2000 and new XP are 'real' OSes, which are not based on DOS.

I guess at least 99.99%
it's a real DOS ... and I have found it more compatible than non M$ DOS
clones.

this is a myth.
I used Win95 DOS for a VERY long time, and now Win98 DOS on the new athlon
machine.
Haven't found any program that does not run here ....
(and I've tried many)
