Dear Ross:
I like Clarence's line about "fatware" and his complaining and
so forth, but disagree about the line about "viruses". People in
this crazy Win 9.x world believe whatever is told them--they are
capable of infinite gullibility and confusion of issues. I wish
it wasn't so, but it is. Windows {if a virus}, is a prevalent,
widespread disease, and it's not going away any time soon. Much
of the business world is dependent on Javascript and Windows. Even
you Clarence, use Netscape at work, albeit a 16-bit version. People
are quick to side with whatever group promotes the kind of software
they feel gives them either a economic advantage, or gives them a
feeling of superiority{did I spell that right?} Yes, the Grammar
Sheriff Terri's dread injunctions are not an end in themselves.
However, I feel that since we are promoting the content of our
"messages" over the bloat of Win-whatever "form", this is still
important. People are getting sensitive about hackers in Eastern
Europe, and no doubt linking Michael's site and Arachne Labs to
this, just because it is in Prague. Also, they think that high-end
Linux computers may be the source of some viruses. I know, this
is absurd and blown way out of proportion, but I see this as a
danger. Mainly, are we reasoning and level-headed opponents of
Windoze, or do we want to associate ourselves with everything on
the Net that is down on Microsoft. Some of the Windows users are
very intelligent people and concerned about the use of language.
We should not ignore this. I don't think Linux is either a pro
or a con thing, just a matter of what distribution, etc.
Yours,
Thomas
