Glenn & list,
what about Michael? Is he alive? He certainly has reasons and
more important things to do... But it may be even possible that:
- he has been drawn to the army
- he has got lost in the Linux jungle
- he has been hijacked or bought by B.G.
If 1.70r3 turns out to be definetely last version of Arachne
I will probably return to 1.66 and use it until the end of my
life (probably get registered first ). But it would be a pity. I
have already got used to CSS support and highly apreciate style
sheets as an effective tool for page design.
If you use style sheets, however, you will tend to create many
small files rather than one large one. This is why I wonder if we
could (without Michael) somehow improve the ftp service Arachne
offers.
On the F2-save page there is a form to send the current file to a
FTP server. You can edit
a) server name, user name, password
b) path and file name on ftp site
The input fields under a) are identical for the entire website, b)
has to be entered differently for each file. Generally, when I make
changes on my website I do not change only one file and I do not do
that online either. So I always have to send more than one file
through FTP.
Would it be possible to send more than one file by one "mouseclick".
When I want to download mail from different servers, I just put the
server names and passowrds into one script file getmail.asf. Would
something similar be possible with Arachne's ftp command?
As I do not know how to write such a sendftp.asf I tried out
various external ftp DOS clients. The ftp client on the Arachne
download page is bug-free, but does not allow to run scripts. The 1993
program ftp 0.70 supports scripts, but gets a socket error (whatever
that me be) after each single operation. In the end I discovered
a later version of ftp 0.70. It seems to be identical - besides the
fact that it has double size and a different screen colour.
That one works - but when I want to close connection and leave the
program I have to wait for time out. But that is still more
practicable than the Arachne internal single file method.
Any ideas? Or is there a 'perfect' ftp client for DOS?

Christof Lange
