AFAIK he's alive and well. He logs in often at arachne.cz so I assume he
isn't in the army. And about M$, I quote from the release notes from 1.0
beta 5 (16 february 1997):
"Microsoft offered me to move to Redmond and work for them - really, I am

Even if Michael stops, at this point, to develop it I still think
development will continue. Michael has stated that he will probably release
it as GPL when he feels it's time to do so. And if he looses the source
atleast 1.69 can be recreated.

I think so, but I'll leave the answering to Glenn or Clarence ;-)
Personally I think Arachnes FTP is really bad, especially when you want to
download. I prefer the text-mode clients more myself.

I think this works:
ftp < input.txt
But I haven't tried it.
