These would be GREAT Linux boxes.
If you have a bit time, than get yourself a Linux distribution, and try for
yourself on one of those machines !

You could setup one as an Internet Gateway, dial into your account, and let
the linuxbox share the connection with the other PCs. (If they are
networked together ...)
[I have done it here with a cablemodem connection ... and it works
extremely well ...)

You could configure it, to get your mail/newsgroups automatically when you
dial in. (fetchmail/leafnode)

You could do .... ZILLIONS of things.

And you would not be so incredibly limited by the DOS kernel with
singletasking/singleuser no direct network support, no memory protection,
....
