Hello list!
They said 'Introduce yourself as a newcomer', so I am! Although I've
not contributed to this list before, I've been watching the digests go
by for a while now. My colleague Ron used to follow the list closely and
send messages to it and I looked over his shoulder. Now Ron doesn't do
that any more, it's left to me to keep our Arachne going, so here goes!
I'm running V1.7r3, by the way, on a 486DX4 + VGA.
All the talk on this list recently regarding installing Linux got me
worked up and also coincided with someone giving me a 4-CD set of
Slackware V3.5 dated 1998. Since I had a spare DX4 PC lying around, I
decided to try it with a view to getting the Linux Arachne to go. I
haven't quite got that far, but I've encountered a problem which I
wondered whether any of you gurus could explain. I can run X by typing
'startx' at the prompt and it all runs fine. However, when I come out of X
to get back to the prompt, the screen fills with @ characters where
there should be spaces and IBM box-drawing characters appear where there
should be text. I can still type (blindly), and enter such things as
'startx' (again) or 'shutdown -r now' and that seems to have the desired
effect, but why is the screen getting messed up?
I hope I haven't broken the rules on my first outing by asking this!
Also, can anyone recommend a mailing list that's as good as this one but
that deals with newcomers' questions about Linux?
Thanks in advance!
All the best,
