I am back on the list again.
Jumping into the M$.gov.uk discussion... it's the same thing overhere.
Recently the cityhall of The Hague decided too for M$ to organise all the
electronic communications to the citizens...
Fears that in future the only browsers will be M$ has been waved away!
The city counsel is either;
ignorant
bribed
foolisch
don't care
anyway we all know what will happen since this happens all over the
world...
Some of us want to stop this (how many of us... 2% of the thinking
population?)
But are we able to? I think we are not!
[1]To stop this we need a weapon, a better tool than outlook and explorer.
But we don't have!
[2]Our weapon should be easier to use and to install.
But we don't have!

Personaly I prefer Arachne to outlook. She is good but not perfect.
When I receive attachments in Word, Exel or Adobe PDF I have to swith to
windows (for word I use view.exe to read the text in Arachne).

About 50% of my browsing is possible with Arachne.
10% is https secured
40% does not function well due to java-script
So for 50% of my web activities I have to use M$ (Netscape does not
function that good)... but I first try Arachne.
Why should any 'normal' person should first try Arachne if M$ gives
better results ALWAYS (50%)...???!!
Besides a 'normal' person has already M$ installed... why try Arachne or
any other browser?

Arachne is easy to use... but not easy to install!
About 1 & half year ago the help of the list was very necessary to have
Arachne going... why should a 'normal' person go through all this
trouble if M$ is 'plug and play'??
Recently I downloaded Arachne 1.70 and all the troubles are here
again... so I still use 1.61

I did... win95 installed. Many DOS programms are not 100% running from
the win95 DOS-prompt. First I had to stop the PC from going directly to
windows. You have to know how to change the booting procedure! I had to
consult some friends to do so.
After that I had to free memory for Arachne... which 'normal' person is
able to?
Recently I got a better and faster PC as a gift. Win98 installed and no
way to run 90% of my normal DOS-programms.
So it was decided to remove Win98 and install win95. !@#$%&^%$#@&
No Arachne, trouble with WordStar and PictureView... changing the boot
procedure did not solve the problem. After two weeks of trying and
swearing, my friend took the 'new' PC back home and i took the old one
back into use.
One must be mad (I'am) to go through all of this trouble if M$ fullfills
all of your wishes!

Perhaps I spoiled your good spirits... not my intention...
but lets be realistic: almost everyone uses windows now, one HAS to.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Linux and/or Arachne won't change the M$-world but give us some fun and
the feeling of independance, a lous in the pelt of Bill G.
But to be a bit competitive Arachne needs Java script handeling and easy
install; easy install to newbees and the not-DOS acustomed.
If I can help to meet these goals... let me know!
